If your car breaks down, here’s what you need to do to stay safe before help arrives. The most important thing is to keep your cool and take all precautions in accordance with the rules.

– As soon as you notice a malfunction, turn on your hazard lights immediately, letting others know that your vehicle is in trouble.
– Try to get to a parking space or rest area. If this is no longer possible, try to move the car to the hard shoulder of the motorway or to the right-hand side of the road.
– Stop the engine.
– Once the vehicle has stopped, turn the steering wheel to the right. In the event of a rear-end collision, this will prevent your car from rolling back onto the road.
– Turn on the parking lights at dusk. If it is dark or foggy, leave the side lights on as well as the hazard lights.

For safety reasons, it is advisable for all vehicle occupants to wear a visibility vest, but this is only compulsory for the driver.

If you feel it is safe to leave the vehicle, always do so through the right-hand door and stand well clear of the vehicle and moving traffic – preferably behind the barrier (if there is one) on the kerb or verge, in front of oncoming traffic.

Do not attempt even a simple repair if you are on a motorway.

If your vehicle, lost cargo or vehicle parts are a hazard to traffic, call 112 or search for towing in Friesland and a local tow truck will be out quickly.

Set up a warning triangle. An open boot will give an additional warning to following traffic.

Repack the warning triangle after the malfunction is corrected.
